FACT – the majority of people reading your newsletter will be more interested in hearing about news from your business than the latest HMRC update or important pension change. This is why it’s more important than ever to combine a good mix of generic news items with lighter news from your business.

Every business has a story to tell, regardless of its size, but it can sometimes be difficult to identify what the story is when all options seem to be exhausted. Here are 20 content suggestions to get you started.

1.New appointments – these are always a good cause for celebration, often associated with business growth, consider combining a new appointment story with a quick Q&A.

2.Staff achievements – exams passed, certifications, training completed, awards received – all positive news stories to share with your readers.

3.New client wins – keep your readers updated with what’s happening in the business, particularly when new clients come on board. If you start working with other businesses then share the news, it helps build credibility.

4.Corporate social responsibility initiatives – taken part in the race for life? planning a Macmillan coffee morning for you all clients and staff, taking part in Movember? – all CSR activity to share in your newsletter.

5.’Day in the life of’ feature – your clients what to know about your business and what goes on behind the scenes. Share a day in the life of one of your staff members and start to engage your readers on a new level.

6.Movers and shakers – highlight when someone is promoted, if someone goes on maternity leave, if someone moves to pastures new, take time to let your readers know your news.

7.Q&As – quick Q&As are great ways to convey information quickly and succinctly, consider a Q&A for a new staff member, an existing staff member or even a client.

8.Client case study – do you have a great relationship with a client who benefits from your skills and expertise? Share this with others in the form of a case study.

9.Referral scheme – start a referral scheme with your clients, benefit from good people knowing good people and incentivise this. This could be a running theme in your newsletter.

10.Sponsorship deals – If you are undertaking sponsorship of any kind then make sure you include information in your newsletter.

11.Media coverage – any exposure in trade, lifestyle, local or regional media, take time to share it with your readers. Link to the article online (if feasible) and provide comment.

12.Employee of the month focus – if you are larger firm with a number of advisers, think about rolling-out an internal employee recognition scheme and share this with your readers. You could combine a Q&A with this format.

13.Happy Birthdays – wish your staff, clients or professional connections a ‘happy birthday’ in your newsletter. Consider a ‘Birthday corner’ when you newsletter is distributed include the names of individual’s whose Birthday it is and wish them a Happy Birthday.

14.Charity focus – linking up with a local or regional charity (one dedicated charity) can really give your business a focus. Not only can you work towards a total fundraising target for the year, you can highlight a particular fundraising cause e.g. new beds for hospice. Use your charity focus in your newsletter and consider a graphic to represent your fund-raising target and how far you are to reaching it. Also set-up a ‘Just Giving’ page and invite your clients, prospects and introducers to contribute.

15.Competition – no prizes needed, simply interact your reader by including a conundrum of some kind, invite responses by email and then reveal the winner in your next edition.

16.Highlight of the month – share your highlight of the month, consider what your business success story of the month is and tell your readers.

17.Guest Blog – remember it doesn’t all have to be about you, invite a blog from a guest. Consider a blog from your dedicated charity partner or a client.

18.Photo of the month – they say a picture tells a thousand words so consider including a photo of the month, examples include a charity achievement or shaking hands with a new client.

19.Recommended – add value in the form of a recommended article in your newsletter. Consider recommending a book, a place to visit, a film in the form of a blog or Q&A.

20.Photo round-up – rather than simply using one photo, round your month-up with a series of photos from your business in the form of a blog post.

All of the above content is great news for your website and to share on social networks. Talk to us about producing bespoke content for you every month if you don’t have the time, you may wish to combine this with our social media and PR offering.

We’re delighted to welcome Emma Fisher to the ClientsFirst graphic design team. To follow are some ‘getting to know you’ questions about Emma:

1) Describe yourself using three words…

Random, enthusiastic, imaginative!

2) Favourite hobbies?

Photography, reading typography related books and running.

3) A goal you’d like to achieve in your lifetime?

I’d love to run a marathon one day.

4) If they made a movie of your life, what would it be about and which actor would you want to play you?

A movie of my life would probably be a random story of events and situations that could only happen to me and I would like Zooey Deschanel to play me.

5) If you could visit any place in the world, where would you choose to go and why?

I would like to visit every place in the world. The problem with travelling is that you meet other travellers who have been to different places and your list just keeps growing. I think next on my holiday list is South America, India and Thailand.

6) What are your pet peeves?

I’m a little picky about coasters being at exact distances from the edge of the table…

7) Anything you dislike about yourself?

My elbows tend to go a little further than straight.

8) Any unique or quirky habits?

For some reason I can always remember jingles from adverts, theme tunes or one hit wonder songs word for word and they tend to be those tunes that everyone else has forgotten about.

9) If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would buy?

My mum and I always said if we win the lottery we would buy walk in wardrobes that rotate (like in Clueless!) and then go on a shopping spree to fill them!
